What is an AI forward deployed engineer, and when does a company need one?
An AI forward deployed engineer works inside the customer’s environment, on the customer’s real systems, rather than delivering a specification from outside. A company needs one when the obstacle to putting AI into production is not the model but everything the model has to touch: the data, the systems, the decision rights and the process that must keep working when the model is wrong.
Why the role exists
The distance between "the prototype works" and "this runs the business process" is not mostly technical, and it is not mostly modelling. It is the accumulated specificity of one company: which system holds the real data, which fields are trustworthy, who is allowed to approve what, what happens on the day the answer is wrong.
That specificity cannot be transferred in a requirements document, because most of it is not written down anywhere. It has to be discovered by working inside the company.
What the role connects
The work spans further than engineering usually does, because the failure spans further. An engagement that only writes code stops at the boundary where the actual problem starts.

- Production workflow and what happens when it fails
- Measurement against the outcome, not model metrics
When you do not need one
When the workflow is genuinely self-contained, the data is already clean and owned, and nobody has to change how they work. That case exists. It is rarer than it looks from the prototype.
Questions buyers ask
- Is this just consulting with a new name?
- The distinguishing property is the output: a workflow running in production with an owner and a record, rather than a recommendation. Govern, measure and optimize are part of the engagement rather than someone else’s follow-up.
- Do they replace our engineers?
- No. They work alongside them, and a handover to the internal team is part of the engagement rather than an afterthought.
